Strathfield Girls’ High School
Together Towards Tomorrow At HIHS the required uniform was a navy blue tunic with white shirt (long or short sleeves), black stockings or white socks in summer, lace up black shoes, navy blazer, navy velour hat with headband, navy gloves, school tie, school badge and house badge. Tunics were usually box pleats but could be double breasted, cross over top with 4 buttons and a panelled skirt with the belt as before. This same style was used for the grey uniform introduced at SGHS in 1953. The tie had black horizontal stripes on a dark blue background but this was replaced by a lighter blue with black and white stripes for SGHS.
At SGHS we started with the grey cross-over winter uniform accompanied by white blouse, school tie, grey sox or stockings, grey blazer, grey gloves, grey felt hat and black lace-up shoes. By 1955 a summer uniform was introduced. This was a light-weight version of the tunic and a straw hat could be worn with it. If hair ribbons were worn, they had to be grey and jewellery was not permitted. As fashions changed the hemlines rose, not just girls growing taller. On Speech Day final year girls were expected to wear white frocks instead of uniforms. For Fifth year farewell the girls fo fourth year treated the fifth year girls to a lunch party and the guests wore street clothes.
Gym tunics at Homebush were a black dress and bloomers. The dress had 2 dark blue bias binding stripes around the neckline and sleeves and at the waist. Around the bottom of the skirt were 3 dark blue stripes. White sandshoes and socks were worn. For sport competitions a cord in house colours was tied around the waist. SGHS had a grey uniform worn over grey bloomers. The blue bias binding stripes were sewn on at a specified distance as before but those on the skirt were higher from the hemline. For house competition we wore a tasseled cord around the waist, in the colour of our house: blue, yellow, green or red. Nowadays girls wear sensible navy shorts and white t-shirts. They look much more comfortable. Today the uniform is greatly changed. It started in the early seventies and there have been slight variations in the checks, etc over the years since. Can anyone give me more details of this? The junior school and senior school have different checks on their skirts and summer dresses.
